From iPhone 13 to iPhone 14 Pro Max: what are the specifics and the differences?

As expected, Apple announced its new iPhone 14 series a couple of days ago at their latest launch event. The iPhone 14 has its release date on the 16th of September, and is already available for pre-orders as we speak. The iPhone 14 Plus has its release date a bit later, namely on the 7th of October.

It is already agreed upon that Apple didn’t reinvent the wheel with its latest model. Other renewals in the past are considered to be more innovative and transformative. Yet, there are some pretty significant changes when compared to the iPhone 13. Also, there are some remarkable differences between the different models of the latest iPhone.

This article will elaborate on all the differences between all models. Be sure to keep reading if you are thinking about purchasing the new iPhone 14.

What are the differences between iPhone 13 and iPhone 14?

As indicated, the iPhone 14 looks actually quite similar to the previous iPhone 13. Why, then, would you buy the latest model?

The main reason to do so is that the technology has improved quite a bit, with many upgrades on the inside. These will without a doubt lead to a more comfortable user experience.

In short, the innovations are as followed:

  • a new Emergency SOS satellite feature, for emergency help when there is no connection;
  • removal of the physical SIM tray (so iPhone 14 is an eSIM-only phone);
  • longer battery life: according to Apple about an hour more;
  • new autofocus on front cameras and overall camera upgrades;
  • Dynamic Islands and other screen updates on the Pro version.

Definitely some exciting updates. Still, the changes in the iPhone 14 when compared to the previous iPhone 13 are not overly substantial. However, for people who use their iPhones for taking pictures, switching to the newest model might be a good action. Also, the iPhone 14 Pro versions have some pretty cool updates which bring the iPhone aesthetics to a whole new level. Lastly, what shouldn’t be forgotten is that the new Emergency SOS function can literally save lives.

From iPhone 14 to iPhone 14 Pro Max: what are the differences?

Apple announced four total models of the new iPhone 14. The models are as followed:

  • iPhone 14;
  • iPhone 14 Plus;
  • iPhone 14 Pro;
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max.

But, what exactly are the differences between them?

Differences iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

We can be rather short about the differences between the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus. Other than its release date, the only difference between the two models is that the iPhone Plus is larger and heavier.

More specifically, the display of the plus model is 17,02 cm (6,7-inch) compared to the 15,49 cm (6,1-inch) display of the normal version. In terms of weight, the Plus model weighs 203 grams (7,16 oz) as opposed to the 172 grams (6,06 oz) of the normal version.

Differences iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro (Max)

For the first year ever, both the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are available in the same sizes. These are, indeed, the sizes as described above. So if you prefer to have a smaller size phone, you can now also opt for the Pro version.

To add, there are also some big differences in terms of screen technology and features. The most significant difference in technology is the Alway-On display on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The display enables the screen to show you your lock screen widgets, the time, and your wallpaper at all times. Moreover, the brightness on the Pro versions is significantly higher when compared to the normal version.

The Dynamic Island

One more difference in the iPhone 14 Pro models is that it contains a Dynamic Island. This means that the cutouts for Face ID and front camera at the top of the screen become an integral part of the navigation of your iPhone 14 Pro.

When you close an app that has Dynamic Island support, a version of the app becomes visible at the top of your screen. The cutout becomes larger depending on the action the app offers. For example, when you set a timer, the iPhone shows the progress in real time at the top of the screen.

From here, you can use the Dynamic Island to navigate the applications. For timers, you can pause or stop them directly from Dynamic Island. The same applies to apps like Music and FaceTime. Some system actions like enabling a Focus mode or putting the iPhone in the charger also trigger animations on Dynamic Island.

What colors will the iPhone 14 come in?

The colors in which the iPhone 14 is available also differs per model. There are some familiar options and some new ones.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus colors

For starters, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are available in midnight (black), starlight (white), blue, purple and (product) RED. So in total, five different colors.

The midnight and starlight versions are also available in all previous versions of the iPhone. The blue and purple versions, however, are specific for this release.

The red color also has been in rotation for quite a while. The money that is generated with the sales of the red color (stylized as: (product) RED) contribute to the research and treatment of COVID-19. So, if you’re feeling ethical, be sure to take this into account.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max colors

When it comes to the Pro models, the only newcomer will be the purple color. Other, more familiar options remain: gold, silver, and space black. The precise name of the purple version is ‘Deep Purple’. This is quite justified, since it’s significantly darker than the purple version of the normal iPhone 14.

Does the iPhone 14 have USB-C charging?

Although EU legislation will oblige Apple to make their iPhones suitable for USB-C charging, it hasn’t yet done so in this particular instance. That means that the new iPhone 14 still makes use of the Lightning technology for charging instead of USB-C.

There might be a couple of reasons for Apple to extend the use of their Lightning technology as long as possible. For starters, it makes sure that all the accessories are in one way or another making extra money for the tech giant. Also, it is believed that it gives a more stable experience with the iOS software.

Safety and privacy with the iPhone 14 (Pro Max)

Although Apple is always proud of their online security measures, there are definitely ways that iPhones can be hacked. We already explained five different ways in which the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max could be hacked in this article.
