From awareness to security: privacy kits for the Dutch Marines
Spy-Fy, specialist in privacy hardware, had the unique opportunity to support the Marine Corps with a practical and symbolic tool: the Privacy Kit. In a world where cyber security is becoming increasingly important, the defence unit wanted to create more awareness among its personnel about digital risks. Together with Spy-Fy, this was translated into a tangible solution.

THE CHALLENGE

How do you increase privacy awareness among military personnel in a way that appeals, is usable and fits the mission of defence?
The Marine Corps was looking for a way to pay attention to digital security in an accessible way, especially around the use of laptops, smartphones and cards during and outside working hours. The solution had to be functional, but also contribute to the conversation about cybersecurity within the organisation.

THE APPROACH

Spy-Fy put together a customised Privacy Kit, fully tailored to the military target audience. The kit consisted of:
A webcam cover with camouflage colour
An RFID blocking card printed with the Marine Corps logo
A USB Data Blocker in tactical colouring with the Marine Corps logo
An information leaflet explaining the privacy kit and tips on digital self-defence
Together with the communication department of the Corps, the look and feel was aligned with the defence corporate identity, so that the kit was not only practical, but also matched perfectly in terms of appearance.

2,000 Privacy Kits delivered to the Marine Corps
Very positive feedback from personnel
Increased awareness of privacy in the workplace and at home

The Privacy Kits were handed out during internal awareness days, training sessions and presentations on digital security. The physical products made the topic much more alive among staff: "Finally something tangible, not just a PowerPoint," said a sergeant major.
